Eglinton Station
This weekend Luke was pretty busy representing Holland Bloorview at the Capital One Gift The Code Hackathon, but we still managed to get in a few hours of exploring another neighbourhood of Toronto. This time, we set out to Christie Station to visit Korea Town, where we enjoyed some tasty lunch, and toilet-themed desserts. Arriving at Christie Station, we first visited the Christie Pits park that's right by the station. Apparently, this was the site of some fierce riots back in the 30s, when the Anglo-Canadian Pit Gang started fighting with a group of Jewish and Italian boys during a softball tournament. It sounded like it was a pretty nasty, racially charged confrontation, though no one was killed. After a short walk around the park, we quickly moved on to explore the stretch of Bloor St. known as Korea Town to escape the cold winds and find some lunch. Korea Town stretches east from Christie Station to Bathurst. We had walked through the area before and taken note of the large number of restaurants offering up some tasty looking Korean fare, so we were eager to sample some of the cuisine. After peeking into a Korean supermarket to see what was on offer, we moved on to Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu restaurant to try out some Korean hot pots. The place was very busy, which is always a good sign, and fortunately for us, featured large pictures of the food on the walls allowing us to make somewhat informed ordering decisions. After filling up on rice, kimchi and broiled BBQ beef, we decided to make one last stop for dessert at Toronto's first ever Poop Cafe (what took them so long!?). Poop Cafe is a toilet-themed dessert bar (of course) where you sit on a toilet seat while enjoying delicious Asian-inspired desserts, served in toilet shaped bowls. Oh, and the walls are covered in facts about poop. We opted for one Oreo sundae in a toilet, and one bowl of Thai ice cream rolls. Both delicious. And we enjoyed our water in urinal shaped mugs too. Yet another tiny slice of Toronto explored, with all sorts of gems discovered. We'll be back to sample some more of the Korean food at some point, having passed by so many other spots that looked and smelled amazing. Here are some more photos from our weekend. This time last year we were visiting O'Brien's Farm in Newfoundland. Two years ago we were Orienteering with our friends.
