Breakout NL Friday

On Friday we headed out to Torbay, with a couple of friends, to pay some people at Breakout NL to lock us in a room. AH!

Breakout NL is a real life room escape game. They have a number of different theme rooms, such as a Titanic themed room and a kidnapping themed room... It's a lot less messed up than it sounds. We promise.

We opted for "The Scientist" theme room, where we played the role of a group of thieves trying to escape the office of a mad scientist before the police arrived.

Once the timer starts, the aim of the game is to find clues and solve puzzles in order to break out of the room. If you get stuck there's also the option to ask for a hint. We started confident and energetic, but quickly realised it wasn't going to be quite as easy as we thought. After a lot of head scratching, and as the time kept ticking down, we gave in and opted for our first hint. Shortly thereafter, we needed a second. Then, when we'd finally run out of time, the staff took pity and walked us through a few more steps. Eventually, we managed to solve a few of the puzzles and escape, but left the experience pretty humbled by our inability to escape the room. Let's just say that we're not cut out for a life of crime.

Despite our epic failings, it was a really fun experience and we're definitely planning to return for another challenge, albeit armed with a few hard won lessons from our first time.

This seems like so much fun! I have a feeling I would find it quite difficult as well though!

I don't know why we originally thought we'd be able to do it without clues; two clues later and we still couldn't solve the puzzles in the allotted time! I would definitely recommend it though and I can't wait to go back and try another room!

I wanted to try this, they have a escape room business near where I live. But the concept seems weird. Are we suppose to find a key to unlock the door or something? Thanks for sharing, I'm going to see if I can get a group together.

Hi Jenny! I assume all of the rooms/places must be different but in our "mission" we got trapped in a room and had to find a way out. We had to solve some puzzles and figure out for ourselves how to get out and what everything meant.

It's really fun and was much harder than we thought it would be; I'd definitely recommend grabbing a few friends and trying it out!

Very cool! Too bad you didn't escape but sounds like a fun learning experience :) they have one of these in Calgary now too!

I think because we didn't escape, now we're even more keen to go back and show everyone what we're made of! ;)

These kind of places seem to be popping up everywhere; you should totally go!
