Brigus Head Hike Saturday

This Saturday we decided to tackle a section of the East Coast Trail with Elizabeth’s parents. Between the dramatic scenery, evidence of nearby moose and an unexpected trek through a marsh, it turned into quite the weekend adventure!

Setting out on the hike.
Starting at Brigus South, we went for a hike around Brigus Head and back. The route led us up out of the small town and into the thick woods that covered the headland. As the path wound its way around the many coves we were treated to stunning views. The trail climbed up and down, and we often found ourselves atop gigantic cliffs looking down.

Our plan was to follow the trail around the coast before heading back to the start along an old road. We had been warned that this road gets a little bit marshy, but we weren’t expecting the road to be completely under water. Elizabeth, Janice and Dave managed to find a fairly dry way around the flooded section. Luke, on the other hand, barreled forward through the water and ended up covered in mud.

As the road continued, things got worse, until eventually we were attempting to navigate a full on marsh. At this point, we realised that this was not the road we were looking for and now we were stuck in the middle of marsh with no (dry) way out. So, we slogged on, and eventually found the real (much drier and less flooded) road that would take us back to Brigus South. Good thing we brought a change of shoes and socks.

It took us around 4 hours to complete the loop. Before heading back to town we took a stroll around Brigus South, taking in the views of the picturesque little town and the dramatic sea cliffs.

Then on our way back into town, Luke received a phone call from his brother to let him know that he’d just become an uncle; Happy Birthday to Thomas Martin O’Connor!

Here are some more photos from our wild weekend adventure:
Curious what we were doing this time last year? Well, we were in San Francisco! We spent 8 days there, touristing around, after Elizabeth was initially sent there for work. Lots of time was spent in the city, but we also made our way to Napa Valley, Yosemite, and Muir Woods. Needless to say, we did and saw a lot!

This time two years ago we were doing another part of the East Coast Trail, and Luke was covering himself in mud. Hmmm. That sounds eerily similar to this past weekend...

Even though you had to wade through the mud to make it, it looks like the hike was completely worth it! Those views are stunning!

The views were SO amazing and the hike was great overall. Luckily the mud was at the end of the hike and not the beginning!

The scenery is beautiful! You are so smart for bringing extra socks. I did not the last time I hiked and ran into a similar situation.

We don't usually bring extra socks but I'm so glad we did this time! It was nice to know that we had nice fresh socks at the end of it all.

What a good idea to bring a change of shoes and socks! I’ve been hiking a few times when I wished I had something to change into! Looks like all the muddy marsh wandering was worth it though! Look at those views :D

Absolutely! I think socks are going to be something we'll pack regularly now!
