Cirque du Soleil Tuesday

On Tuesday, Elizabeth's Aunt Vicki treated us to a Cirque du Soleil show, Luzia! It was a birthday gift for both of us, although Luke's birthday isn't until December. We're not complaining - the show was unbelievable!

This past weekend was Elizabeth's birthday weekend, but we didn't do much of anything as Elizabeth got her wisdom teeth out last Thursday and still isn't feeling 100%. But we had tickets to Cirque du Soleil  on Tuesday so we couldn't let a little pain get in the way of an awesome evening.

Cirque du Soleil started in Québec in the early 1980's as a small travelling group that performed circus acts, in a street performance style, to original music. Word spread, and by 1990 the group had performed shows in the US and Europe. Nowadays, there are a number of Cirque du Soleil shows going on at any given time all over the world. There are currently eight shows on tour and some that are permanent in Las Vegas. It has become a phenomenon.

The show that we saw was called Luzia, "A waking dream of Mexico" and it was certainly that. From the mind-blowing acrobatic stunts, to the stunning costumes, and impressive showmanship, the performances were beautiful. It didn't take long to get immersed in this dreamlike-version of Mexico. We found ourselves getting so caught up in the show that we were audibly shocked when it started "raining" and when, a little while later, the ground opened up to reveal a pool of water, a cenote.

Reflecting on the show as we were driving home, we found it difficult to determine which act we all enjoyed the most. The acrobatic swings? The guys throwing the girl? The girls in the hoops?

From the Cirque du Soleil website:
"Now in its fourth decade...the essence of what we do has stayed constant: we invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world."
When it comes to Luzia, Mission accomplished.

Curious what we were doing in past years around this time? In 2013, we visited the (now) newly crowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mistaken Point and checked out some festivals in St. John's. In 2014, we showed some visiting friends around St. John's and went on our first Foodie Tour. Then one year ago, in 2015, we went to Rodrigues Winery in Whitbourne and drank a decent amount of Blackcurrant Liqueur.
