Homemade Sushi Saturday

On Saturday we finally got around to trying our hand at making our own Sushi. Since we’re such big fans of the stuff, it seemed to make sense to at least have a go! Here’s how it went...

Making food using raw fish always seemed like risky business to us, so before we went ahead and started making maki (rolls) and nigiri (fish on rice) we did a bit of research. After a bit of Googling we felt confident enough to set off to find our ingredients. Thank you, internet.

The key ingredients, and tools, we discovered were needed to start making sushi were:
  • Sushi-grade fish
  • Sushi rice (short, extremely sticky rice)
  • Sushi vinegar
  • Sushi Nori (sheets of seaweed)
  • Mat
  • Other fillings (cucumber, avocado)

We found almost all of these things at Sobey’s (who knew!), except for Sushi-grade fish, which we ended up getting at the Fish Depot downtown. It’s important to use Sushi-grade fish, as otherwise you run the risk of ingesting parasites. We opted for some yellowfin tuna, which was tasty.

You can go to town on the other fillings for your sushi rolls. We opted to keep things simple with avocado and cucumber, but did try our hand at spicing up some of the tuna rolls with sriracha. We also picked up some crab sticks so we could try the classic California Roll.

Once we had all the ingredients, next came the real challenge of actually making some sushi. Again, Google helped us out with plenty of instructions for how to make the “perfect” sushi. Our results weren’t quite perfect… but by following the steps we were able to make some tasty, if not pretty, sushi.

We had a lot of fun trying our hand at sushi-making, and may bust out our skills again sometime! For now, here are some more photos of our sushi adventure:
(SLIDESHOW)
Apparently the beginning of October is a (Japanese) Foodie time of year for us because thsi time last year we explored Japantown and the Japanese Tea Gardens in San Francisco, after having eaten our way around the Ferry Building Marketplace.

AND this week in 2013, we tried out a local vegetarian restaurant and Luke showed off some of his fancy art skills.

Next weekend we'll be back in the UK to see family and friends (including long-time Something Saturdays fan Dave Wood ) so stay tuned for an extended post on our trip!
