International Food and Craft (and Curling) Saturday

This past weekend we participated in the Bon Voyage curling bonspiel with Elizabeth's parents, and decided to check out the International Food and Craft Expo between games!

The International Food and Craft Expo was hosted at the Lions Club Chalet, the same place as the St. John's Farmer's Market. A few of the food vendors were the same as the Farmer's Market, but the crafts seemed fairly different. Apparently there were vendors there from over 20 countries, which is impressive considering the size of the space.

We visited the Expo at lunchtime so we went straight for the food and decided to take a look at the crafts afterwards. Luke picked up his food from a “Multi-Ethnic” booth and had rice noodles, deep fried plantains and sweet potatoes with coconut chicken curry and a chicken kebab. Elizabeth (and her parents) went to an Indian Food vendor and had butter chicken, samosas, naan, rice, and a couple of different vegetable curries. Yum.
Then for dessert, we all split a Hungarian Chimney Cake. It was covered in cinnamon and was incredibly tasty. We didn’t intend to eat the entire thing for lunch, but what can we say – it was delicious – not  to mention, very fun to eat!

Afterwards we spent some time looking at the crafts from around the world and talking to some of the vendors. There were lots of interesting items there but we decided to hold off buying anything this time around.

As mentioned earlier, we were also in the Bon Voyage curling bonspiel over the weekend; it’s essentially the last hurrah for the year at the St. John’s Curling Club. This year 52 teams participated and it’s mixed format,  meaning two men and two women play on each team in alternating positions. We also participated in Bon Voyage last year, which was actually Luke’s first time curling! He has refined some of his skills since then. However, we didn’t play with Elizabeth’s parents last year as they were already taken, so this time was a good opportunity to play together.

Team uniforms/costumes are not required by any means, but Elizabeth decided to go out on her lunch break last Friday to see what she could find…

And for only $20 per person, you too can look like a gang of curling construction workers!

Over the weekend we only ended up playing 3 games, but still made it to the B Division ‘Quarter-finals’. We had a pretty fun weekend and the only low point was Elizabeth tripping over a rock while sweeping and falling pretty epically, and painfully, onto 4 rocks and her broom. There you go, curling may look tame but it can be a dangerous sport!

Here are some more pictures from the Expo as well as Bon Voyage:
