Lewisporte Winter Weekend

This past weekend we made our way out to Central Newfoundland to celebrate Elizabeth's grandfather's 80th birthday! We wanted to explore and do a bit more over the weekend, but unfortunately the winter weather got in our way.

Birthday Celebrations
Originally, we had planned to drive out to Lewisporte (about 4 hours from St. John's) on Friday after work, but the weather wasn't great so we delayed until Saturday morning. We drove out with Elizabeth's dad, Peter, and Emily. The drive out wasn't bad, except for a substantial amount of wind, but we made it out there in the early afternoon.

After we arrived, we got settled in and were hoping to explore a bit, but before we knew it we were off to Elizabeth's grandfather's house to partake in the birthday festivities. We spent a couple of hours playing party games (some that we'd never played before) and everyone won prizes; we ended up taking home a mini water gun!

We also took a bit of time to look through old albums of the grandkids, and there were some pretty funny ones. I mean, who knew that this hilarious photo even existed?

Everyone had a great time at the party and afterwards we were treated to a birthday slideshow, followed by a tasty turkey dinner. After supper, we shared some stories about Pop and played some board games (or cards, in the case of most people). We also beat Aunt Judy's high score in Spell Tower ;)

Throughout the trip, we were keeping an eye on the weather because we knew that there was supposed to be a storm on Sunday. That morning, the snow started early so we had to get on the road as soon as we could. It was unfortunate because we ended up spending less than 24 hours in Lewisporte and Luke was looking forward to getting a feel for the place because he'd only visited briefly once before.

Throughout the drive back to St. John's, the conditions were very poor with lots of blowing snow, slippery and snow-covered roads, and wind. Luckily, Elizabeth's parents and aunt drove the cars home, so we didn't have to worry about doing it ourselves. Regardless, everyone had to take it slowly, and the normal 4 hour ride took us almost 7 HOURS! Needless to say it was a long day in the car. A high point of the day was ending up behind a snow plow, which cleared the road for us.
Another high point of the trip was discovering that Elizabeth had some free TV access on her phone, so we watched the Canada vs China men's curling game on the road! Score.

Although the weather shortened our weekend in Lewisporte, we were really glad to go out and celebrate Pop's birthday with everyone! Here's a quick slideshow of a few more pictures from the weekend:

I can't remember if you (Elizabeth) we're on that band trip to Gander or Grand Falls it wherever where there was a big storm and it took us like a million hours for the bus to get back? Oh wait, I think it was that trip to St. Lawrence.

Either way, winter driving in NL sucks. Glad you guys got back safe.

No, I think I must have dodged that trip! Luckily.

Yeah, winter driving can be terrible.
