Movie and a Dinner Saturday

Last Saturday we attended a film screening as part of the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, and then had a mid-afternoon meal at International Flavours!

Waiting for the film to start
The St. John's International Women's Film Festival was established in 1989 - meaning that it celebrated its 25th anniversary this year! The films aren't only for women; the festival just showcases female film-makers and their work. Elizabeth's Aunt Vicki was in town for the festival, so Elizabeth saw a movie with her family on Friday, and then Luke joined in on Saturday.

At midday on Saturday we saw the film Heartbeat at the LSPU Hall, which was written and directed by Andrea Dorfman. The film is set in Halifax, and follows a girl in her late 20’s/30’s at a critical time in her life - debating her career choice right after a break up. From that brief description, the movie sounds a bit depressing or typical, but it was fun, relatable, and we all really enjoyed watching it. The little animations intertwined in the movie added another level of uniqueness.

If you want to make a bit more sense of what we just said in that last paragraph, here's the trailer:
After the screening, we stayed for a Q&A with the writer-director, which was great. It gave us a better feel for filmmaking in Canada and how the film itself was made. Overall, we would definitely recommend seeing this movie if you get the chance!

Following the screening, we stopped by International Flavours for lunch. It’s a small Indian and Pakistani restaurant that has been around in various forms since 1996, but it was our first time eating there.

The menu is small but varies daily. Last Saturday we each enjoyed a “daily platter” with basmati rice, chicken or lamb curry, lentil curry, vegetarian curry, and more vegetables on the side. Unfortunately they were out of samosas, but we shared some naan bread. The food was tasty and filling, and we’ll definitely be back.
Later that afternoon we decided to walk around our neighbourhood and enjoy the 20 C fall weather! We walked along Rennie’s River trail, snapping pictures along the way, and only turned back when it started to rain. Here are a few pictures from our walk:

Beautiful fall photos! It's weird being over here where all the trees are in "spring" mode. (There was probably a better way to phrase that but I'm sure you know what I mean)
