Mud Immortal and East Coast Trail Saturday

On Saturday we had a pretty active day; Luke participated in Mud Immortal with some friends in the morning, and we hiked the Quidi Vidi portion of the East Coast Trail in the afternoon!

Quidi Vidi - East Coast Trail
Mud Immortal was a 5 km "adventure challenge" that took place at Butterpot Park, 30 minutes from St. John's. There were quite a few issues with the event, but luckily since Luke was in the 9:30 am group (the second race of the day), we didn't have to wait in any lines at the start, and didn't have any trouble parking. Some things were disappointing, but Luke still got to run around and complete a few obstacles while doing it, so it worked out well. The sun even decided to come out - it was less than 10 degrees in the morning, uncharacteristic for this time of year, making it pretty chilly.

Then in the afternoon (after a quick nap), we completed part of the East Coast Trail, near Quidi Vidi, with Elizabeth's dad. It was our first time doing the trail and we really enjoyed it!

The trail starts near the far end of Quidi Vidi Lake and goes around White Hills, along the coast.  The trail is right in the city, but you feel like you're away from civilization for most of it. The version of the hike that we took was about 6 km, and there were great views of the Atlantic, Cape Spear, Quidi Vidi, and most of St. John's throughout. The unique part about the trail is that it allows you to see the city from a completely different angle!

The area is shared by hikers and bikers, so you do need to make sure you're on the right trail, but the markings are fairly clear in most places. However, we did get a bit lost at one point near the end, but managed to get back on track.

All in all, we had a great day, and here are some more pictures of our Something Saturday:

Sound's like a lovely day! Great pics. The East Coast Trail was instrumental in National Geographic proclaiming the east coast of NFLD as the most scenic coastline in the world. Cheers.
