Ocean Pond and Salmonier Long Weekend

We spent most of this past weekend at Elizabeth's family's cabin in Ocean Pond, with her family. Then, since Luke had the day off work for the Discovery Day holiday on Monday (and Elizabeth is currently unemployed so everyday is a holiday) we did our 'Something' at Salmonier Nature Park on Monday!

On Friday night we went to a new gastro pub in St. John's called The Club. It was our first time there, and it was extremely filling, but extremely tasty. We also didn't realize that the onion rings would be the size of a human head, so we may have ordered a bit too much food. Then we hung out in Bannerman Park for a bit and attempted to digest the deliciousness that we had just consumed.

On Saturday morning, we drove out to Ocean Pond to meet up with Elizabeth's parents (and Maebe). We spent some time breaking apart an old dresser and then cutting down old trees to get them ready to be chopped up for firewood... Yeah, we're hardcore.
Maebe also decided to have a "Something Saturday" of her own, and went swimming voluntarily in the pond. Once she started swimming, she couldn't be stopped! All she wanted to do for the rest of the weekend was swim, fetch a stick from the water, fetch a rock from the water, and the list goes on and on. It took her 5 years to get up the courage to go for a substantial doggie paddle, and she doesn't seem to be regretting it.

Then on Sunday we also went swimming (although Maebe didn't really like the company), went kayaking, and Luke played Duck Hunt for the first time - as hard as that is to believe.

We were lucky to have great weather on Sunday, when more family members and friends came out to the cabin, but Monday was a different story. It was pouring rain and it seemed to get worse as the morning went on. We had decided to go to Salmonier Nature Park and were determined to go, despite the rain. Salmonier Nature Park is a sort of like a wildlife zoo about 45 minutes from St. John's, where visitors walk along a trail through nature, and see animals found in the province in their natural surroundings.

Since the trail is entirely outdoors, we spent some time eating our lunch in the car, hoping that the rain would subside. But that wasn't the case. We went on the walk throughout the park anyway, but it seemed as if the animals also didn't like the rain, and many of them were hiding. However, we did see a snowy owl, a baby caribou, great horned owls, a peregrine falcon, a couple of moose, and an otter.

We were mostly disappointed that we didn't get to see the foxes, but we did see a fox in the wild last year on the west coast of Newfoundland and we were eager to dry off in the car, so it wasn't a big deal. All in all, a good visit, but we'll probably be back on a nicer day - especially because admission is free!

In the evening, we saw Man of Steel in theatres and bought some new rain coats that should be able to better withstand future rain showers.

Here are some more pictures from our weekend!
