Ontario Science Centre Friday

This weekend Elizabeth’s brother Peter, and his girlfriend, Emily, came all the way from Montréal to hang out with us on our long weekend, so we ended up trying out lots of new things! First stop, the Ontario Science Centre.

After a lazy Friday morning of lying in followed by an epic breakfast of bacon and pancakes, we finally made the effort to leave the apartment and headed to the Ontario Science Centre. Elizabeth’s Aunt Vicki joined us too, and provided a much needed car ride! After arriving at the museum it quickly became apparent that lots of other people had the same idea for Good Friday; getting into the museum proved to be a bit of a challenge, with cars lining up to compete over limited parking.

The museum itself was also pretty busy, with lots of families making the most of the Easter weekend. Fortunately, once we navigated our way to the Space exhibit, things calmed down a little bit and we could enjoy learning about the stars and the moon in relative peace. We always enjoy space stuff, and the exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre was a good one.

Afterwards we headed a few more levels down into the museum - which is built down the side of a ravine - to check out a few more exhibits.

We particularly enjoyed learning more about the human body, though some of the human cross sections on display were a little disturbing. We also discovered how little we knew about the location of our internal organs - not a bad thing to know!

Finally, we checked out the Science Arcade, a collection of lots of demonstrations of various scientific phenomena. Everything from mini tornados, to gas turbine engines and bat caves were on display. Lots of fun to play with, before eventually being kicked out of the museum by a security guard (because it was closing time, not because we did anything wrong… we think).

We spent the evening enjoying amazing views from the One Eighty restaurant, which just happens to be on top of a building not too far away from our apartment. We showed up just in time to watch the sun set over the city, with amazing views over downtown as the buildings began to light up one by one. Barring one waitress-spilling-a-cocktail-everywhere incident, it was an awesome evening with great food and drink.

Our crew for the weekend!
The rest of the weekend was equally enjoyable and relaxing. On Saturday we made it down to the Purina Pawsway on the waterfront to watch the Ultimutts - a troupe of stunt dogs - put on a free show. All of the dogs are rescue animals, and were out in force performing tricks on skateboards, scooters and tightropes. The Pawsway itself was a pretty cool building, with its very own Pet Hall of Fame celebrating the amazing dogs and cats (...mostly dogs) who had gone to great lengths to save the lives of people. A perfect spot for pet people like us.

On Saturday, we also wandered around the Distillery District, surprised Peter with an early birthday cake, watched Zootopia (highly recommended), and had a go at Luke’s new mobile game, Kapsul Infinite, which will be available on a phone near you shortly. One of our playtesters even said “It’s kind of addictive”, so you know it has to be good.

Here are a few more photos of our fun family weekend in the city:

Curious what we've done for previous Something Saturdays? Well this time last year, we checked out a sushi spot amidst a weekend of curling, and this time two years ago we visited the Railway Coastal Museum for some Newfoundland railway history.
