Depending on who you were (either Luke, Elizabeth, or Sam), you either witnessed 4, 6, or 8, two and a half hour curling games. So yeah, we spent a lot of time at the rink. Luckily the soft pretzels were tasty and the curling was impressive.
Last weekend we spent a substantial amount of time at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, watching the Grand Slam of Curling Players’ Championship! To round out our busy weekend, we also wandered around the nearby Allan Gardens and stopped into The Second City for a lot of laughs. Elizabeth’s friend, Samantha (aka Sam), flew up from St. John’s to join us for a long weekend full of curling action. The Players’ Championship was hosted downtown in the former Maple Leaf Gardens which was incredibly convenient as it is a short 20 minute walk from our apartment. Depending on who you were (either Luke, Elizabeth, or Sam), you either witnessed 4, 6, or 8, two and a half hour curling games. So yeah, we spent a lot of time at the rink. Luckily the soft pretzels were tasty and the curling was impressive. It was a great event, and we witnessed some amazing shot-making by some of the top teams in the world. The icing on the cake was the fact that both finals were really exciting games to watch, and that Team Gushue, from Newfoundland, went undefeated in the Round Robin and ended up winning the Men’s event! On top of that, we were on TV at least three times. Sam was thrilled. Somehow we still had some free time this weekend, so on Friday night we went to the One Eighty restaurant for drinks after the game and to admire the views. We also spent one of our breaks between games at the Allan Gardens, which is a park with a free 16,000 sq ft indoor botanical garden spanning six greenhouses. The park has been around since 1858 and is a nice way to explore nature while being in the centre of downtown Toronto. Although, we were overdressed for the 20 C weather, so the greenhouses were a little warm… but we can’t complain about the weather considering it snowed less than a week ago! To cap it all off, on Saturday night we met up with another friend from Newfoundland who was in Toronto and we went out for dinner and checked out a comedy show at The Second City! The Second City's Toronto location has given quite a number of Canadian comedians their start. We saw a show called The Hotline Always Blings Twice where we enjoyed various entertaining sketches and a few musical numbers. So much fun. Here are some more photos from a full, but awesome, weekend: (SLIDESHOW) The time last year we were enjoying a tasty Food and Wine Festival, and two years ago we spent a random Saturday exploring downtown St. John's.
