After the show they answered some questions from the audience, which gave us an idea of how they prepare and produce each show. Overall it was a great, relaxing Something Saturday, and we now have a new podcast to listen to!
Last weekend Luke was a bit under the weather, so we opted for a fairly low key Something Saturday where we could just sit down in a dark room and listen to people talking, at the Hot Docs Podcast Festival. Hot Docs, the documentary cinema that we are now proud members of, were hosting a weekend long podcast festival featuring live recordings of some popular podcasts as well as some workshops and other cool stuff. Given the popularity of podcasts these days, most of the events were sold out by the time we decided to go along (Saturday morning). Luckily, we managed to snag a couple of tickets to a live recording of the (fantastic) Science Vs. podcast. As you might have guessed from the title, the podcast pits science against popular science myths, fads, and other general misinformation. On this live episode they tackled the question "Are red wine, chocolate and coffee good for you, or bad for you". They started out by showing clips of all the daytime TV shows that had been proclaiming loudly that studies say you should (or shouldn't) drink red wine (or eat chocolate, or drink coffee) every single day. It highlighted just how much confusion there is on the subject, with new studies coming out all the time that seem to contradict eachother. So that's where Science Vs comes in, to tackle the huge body of research on the subject and try to figure out some sort of consensus. The Aussies running the show did a fantastic job of walking us through the science behind the studies, and came to the very sciencey conclusion of - maybe? Science cannot yet say definitively whether these are good things, but there's some evidence to say they are. So drink up. But limit yourself to 25g of chocolate. After the show they answered some questions from the audience, which gave us an idea of how they prepare and produce each show. Overall it was a great, relaxing Something Saturday, and we now have a new podcast to listen to! This time last year we were a the Toronto Christmas Market. Two years ago we were at the Republic of Doyle Set Sale.
