Sliding Saturday

On Saturday we decided to make our way to some hills in and around St. John's for an afternoon of sliding!

Sliding with a View
Since Luke officially became a Permanent Resident of Canada on Thursday (which is not as permanent as it sounds), we decided to do some Canadian winter stuff over the weekend to celebrate!

We started off by going to see an Ice Caps hockey game, the local AHL team, on Friday night. We went to a game last year shortly after Luke first arrived in St. John's, so this was his second time seeing them play.

Then on Saturday, we decided to go sliding. For people from Newfoundland, sliding may not seem like a big event but Luke hadn't had much opportunity to go sliding in the past, especially not somewhere with this much snow. Saturday was a great day for it, hovering around 1-3 C, and lots of sun! We brought the only two slides left at Elizabeth's parent's house - a crazy carpet and a plastic toboggan.

We started off at the Logy Bay Lump. It used to be a ski hill, just a few minutes from St. John's, but hasn't been open in recent years. Elizabeth had never been there before so we struggled to find it initially. When we arrived, there was one family there, teaching their kids how to ski at the bottom of the hill, but the hill is huge so there was more than enough room for us to go sliding! Plus the view from the top was amazing.

We climbed all the way to the top to start, but after going down the really steep bit at the top and falling off the slide a few times, we decided to take it slower and move down the hill. Luke's signature move was digging in his heels to slow down the toboggan which just ended up covering us both in snow and severely reducing our visibility. We also had some hilarious wipe-outs when we each went down the hill on our own.
Throughout our time there, we ended up with lots of snow in our faces and had a great time. For our last slide at the Lump, we decided to attempt to take a few selfies as we were going just to see if we could take a good one...

Yeah, we had a fun afternoon.

After that, we grabbed sandwiches at Breen's and we went out for sliding round two at the hill next to CNA. Unfortunately by that point in the day, the snow was wetter and we struggled to make it down the hill. We didn't stay there for long, but by the time we finished our day of sliding, we were exhausted. Going sliding counts as going to the gym, right?

All in all, a great day. Here are some more pictures from the weekend:

Yeah the view was pretty amazing and we had no clue what we were in for until we got to the top!
