Snowy Stop Motion Saturday

Although a snow storm and widespread, long-lasting, power outages challenged us to figure out a Something Saturday for this week, we prevailed with a short LEGO stop motion animation film!

and... scene!
This past weekend there was a vicious storm across most of Newfoundland, resulting in rotating power outages in anticipation of the storm, as well as uncontrolled power outages for days due to unforeseen circumstances. Luckily, we only lost power in our apartment for a few hours while we were home over the weekend, but we expect that our apartment lost power a few other times when we weren't home.

On Saturday, we lost power at 9 am, along with 90% of the island, and since our apartment has so many windows, when the power went out, it got cold pretty fast. We spent the morning doing things that people normally do in a power outage such as wrap up in blankets, read, and eat cold things. By mid-afternoon, power was restored in many places in St. John's, and we went over to Elizabeth's parent's house to play some games (and make our stop motion animation film!).

On the drive over, we snapped a few pictures of the snow/road conditions. There were HUGE line-ups at Tim Horton's and Burger King, extending onto the street, because power still hadn't been restored to many homes.
We we arrived at the house, we used the LEGO pieces from the game Creationary for our film. Stop motion animation is a technique used to make objects look like they're moving on their own by taking lots of individual pictures and putting them together sequentially to make the film. In each picture, the object is manually moved slightly, creating the illusion of movement when the pictures are put together.

Luke downloaded an app, iMotionHD, to help with the making of the film (this app can also do timelapses which we will probably be taking advantage of in the future). We also had to construct an apparatus to hold the iPhone steady while we were taking the pictures because it's important to keep the camera in one place. Since we were using LEGO for the film, we made the iPhone stand out of LEGO blocks we had nearby.
