Subway Saturday: Ossington Station

After a week away in the UK we decided to ease ourselves back into Toronto life with another Subway Saturday. This time we set out west on Bloor Street to Ossington Station for a spot of leisurely wandering in the sun.

Ossington is only a few stops away from us so we have passed through the area before, but had never stopped to enjoy the local shops and restaurants. Ossington Station is right on Bloor Street West, which is lined with red-brick buildings that countless independent businesses call home. It's a nice feature of Toronto that venturing slightly out of the downtown core drops you right into these laid-back, low-rise neighbourhoods, so its easy to get away from the bustle.

Arriving at Ossington we took a stroll around the block before finding some lunch. Stepping just a block away from Bloor Street in either direction puts you firmly in residential areas, with leafy roads and quirky old houses. We had a quick look around, guessing house prices as we went (some fairly run-down, yet centrally located, and gigantic mansions made it pretty hard), before meandering back to a hot dog joint we'd passed along the way. We split a tasty, if a little over-filled hot dog between us.

Still a little peckish, we stopped in at a bakery just a little way down the street. They had a huge selection of very tempting treats, but in the end we opted for a couple of delicious custard tarts in crisp and flaky pastry.

We continued on, making our way back along Bloor and stopping in at a guitar shop for Luke to peruse their collection of banjos and tiny amplifiers. Our final stop on our afternoon walk was Elizabeth's favourite knitting supplies store. We spent more than a few minutes in there, picking out the ideal wool and needles for her next project - its going to be epic.

We carried on walking for a little bit longer back along Bloor towards home, before giving up and jumping on the subway again at Christie Station. Still, another little stretch of Bloor Street successfully explored, and we're firmly back into the swing of Toronto life again now.
