Its fair to say we had a pretty great evening, and will definitely be back to see another TFC game when the weather warms up. We might even let Andy visit again in the future too!
This weekend Andy was in town, so, with Toronto gone sports mad with playoffs in full swing and the start of the baseball season, we decided to hit up our first ever Toronto FC game as they took on Chicago Fire! We met up with Andy downtown on Friday evening, before catching a subway and streetcar out to the football stadium. There were plenty of red shirts riding along with us, so we knew we were heading in the right direction. Arriving at the stadium, we picked up a beer and a hot dog and enjoyed the beats being delivered by Backup DJ before the fanfare of the national anthems. In a bit of a twist, the performer stopped singing the Canadian anthem half way through, leaving it to the crowd to finish it off - which was actually really cool. Its not often you hear twenty thousand people singing the same song. The game was exciting from the kick-off, not least because of the hardcore TFC fans who somehow kept the chanting going for the full 90 minutes. We'd read before the game that German player Bastian Schweinsteiger had recently joined Chicago, but he wasn't enough to stop Toronto from putting in a couple of early goals. The crowd obviously went wild, and a few unexpected fireworks went off as well. The game continued to be back and forth however, with Schweinsteiger and pals threatening on several occasions. Toronto managed to maintain their lead though, with a final score of 3 - 1. Not a bad game to go see. After the game we rejoined the masses as they slowly flowed away from the stadium, underneath the nearby railway, and up again into Liberty Village. We headed to The Craft Brasserie, which had been recommended to Elizabeth, to catch up with the NHL play-offs. After a bit of a wait we enjoyed a few beers (from a list of 120), some tasty food and a bit of nail biting hockey action. Its fair to say we had a pretty great evening, and will definitely be back to see another TFC game when the weather warms up. We might even let Andy visit again in the future too! This time last year Soph was in town, and we also did some sport spectating. Two years ago, we were exploring Newfoundland while learning a bit about Elizabeth's heritage.
