Underwater Santa Sunday

10/12/2014

On Sunday, we went to Ocean Quest in CBS and got underwater photos taken with Santa Claus! Luke is familiar with SCUBA equipment so he enjoyed his time sitting on Santa’s knee, but for Elizabeth, it was quite the (slightly traumatic) experience.

Ocean Quest Adventure Resort is a dive and adventure business based in Conception Bay South. Last Sunday was Customer Appreciation Day, so they were offering deals in their Dive Shop as well as free underwater photos with Santa.

We arrived there just after noon on Sunday and went straight in the Dive Shop to sign waivers. After getting changed, we made our way into the indoor training pool enclosure. We were briefed on some SCUBA equipment and hand signals, but since we were only going to be underwater for a short period of time and no prior SCUBA experience was required to participate, we just wore masks and breathed through a regulator connected to another person’s diving cylinders.

Luke hopped into the water, and because he has some previous diving experience, he had no trouble going underwater and hanging out with Santa. Breathing underwater was no big deal, even when it felt like the underwater camera was taking some up close head shots.

Although smiling didn't have the effect he was hoping for...
However, Elizabeth was another story. Unfortunately we didn’t have any time to practice using the equipment before diving into the deep end into Santa’s arms and this caused some problems for someone completely new to breathing underwater. After trying to go down a few times, but finding it kind of scary and a bit stressful, she took some time to practice in the shallow end before her final attempt. Through some miracle, Elizabeth managed to hold it together underwater for one minute – just enough time to get the money shot.

We were hoping to get a picture of the two of us together underwater but due to the additional couple of minutes it took for Elizabeth to get her picture taken, we missed our opportunity.

This was one of the shortest Something Saturdays on record, but it isn't one we'll be forgetting anytime soon! Here are a few more photos from our Underwater Santa experience:

What a unique opportunity, I would totally do this if they had this in Brisbane.

Yeah, it was a really unique opportunity. We originally had something else planned for the weekend but as soon as we heard about this event, we jumped at the chance!
