Waterfront Bike Ride Saturday

This past Saturday we finally took advantage of Bike Share Toronto and rode a couple of rented bikes along Toronto's Waterfront Trail!

On Saturday afternoon, we hopped on the subway and set off for Union Station where our Something Saturday adventure began. We made our way to the waterfront area, picking up some lunch along the way.

It was a sunny, beautiful autumn day, with 20 degree temperatures, making it the perfect time for our first bicycle rentals in Toronto. We rented our bikes from Bike Share Toronto which is the same system as the BIXI Bikes in Montreal and "Boris Bikes" in London, so the bikes can be picked up and dropped off at many locations around the city. A full day pass costs $7, but you have to check your bikes in at any location every 30 minutes to avoid additional charges.

We picked up our bikes across from Beaver Tails on Queens Quay and walked them across the road to the dedicated cycle path along the Waterfront; this path/trail is great for those of us who prefer to not cycle in big city traffic.

Starting downtown, we headed west, through a few intersections (with separate bike signals), until we ended up in Coronation Park where we took some time to admire the autumn colours in the trees.

We then hopped on a different path which took us closer to the water so we could see the sailboats on Lake Ontario, and catch whiffs of smokey BBQs as we passed the pre-game tailgating for the Argos game at Ontario Place.

As we ventured further along the trail, we felt like we were getting further and further outside the city so finally we decided that it was time to turn back. Unfortunately we had the wind and a couple of inclines working against us, but it was an enjoyable ride regardless.

After returning home, we took a look on the map and figure that we cycled about 14 km in total, at a leisurely pace, with a few breaks to admire the scenery. The trail was relatively flat, picturesque, and we highly recommend it! One of our favourite afternoons in Toronto so far.

What an awesome way to see the city & take in the Autumn scenery. And exercise too ;)
