Zip lining and Mini Aquarium Saturday

This past Saturday we spent the day in Petty Harbour - zip lining and visiting the new mini aquarium! Petty Harbour is a small picturesque fishing village that is about a 25 minute drive from downtown St. John's.

In anticipation of the zip-lining adventure, we decided that we didn't want to risk dropping or damaging our digital cameras, so we bought disposable cameras and used them for the day! It's unbelievable how different they are to use when you're so comfortable with digital cameras, and taking pictures was a 'something' in itself. Overall, the pictures turned out great and they look a bit retro, which we kind of expected.

The day started off at North Atlantic Zip Lines in Petty Harbour. After being harnessed up, we were loaded into a van and driven up a nearby hill. We then had to climb up a fairly steep incline before making it to the first zip line. The first zip line was just meant to get people used to the concept so it was very straightforward and not too high off the ground.

The next zip line was much more intense.

For some of them, we had to basically lie down with one hand on the handle bars and one hand on the lines connecting us to the handle bars so that we could be as streamlined as possible. When you're lying down it isn't as scary because you're not looking down.  But some people in our group didn't make it the whole way from one end to the other and got stuck a few metres out from the end so they had to be rescued.

At North Atlantic Zip lines, there are 10 zip lines in total; most of them are way above the trees, but some of them go through the tops of higher trees. The entire experience took about 2.5 hours, and we were very warm by the end of it. It was 25+ degrees and we had to stand around a bunch while waiting for other people, not to mention that there was no wind and no shade. Plus, no one had taken water with them (except for the guides), but that's another issue.

But overall it was an awesome experience! Lots of great views and lots of fun.

After zip lining we had lunch at Chafe's Landing and it was delicious. We ate on the deck outdoors in the shade, which was nice.

Then we visited the new mini aquarium in Petty Harbour. It's a very small facility with tanks full of local marine life and many touch tanks so that visitors can pick up the creatures. The animals come from the ocean nearby and all of the marine life is released back there at the end of the summer. It's a great idea and it was interesting to see (and touch) some local sea creatures!
For some reason, we find this picture of Elizabeth picking up a starfish hilarious.

Overall, we had a fun and eventful Something Saturday! The disposable cameras were a great idea because we were limited by the number of pictures we could take, and we had no idea how they were going to turn out. Unfortunately the mini aquarium ones didn't turn out as well as the zip lining ones, but it's because the lighting in there was tricky.

Here are some more pictures from our Something Saturday!

Looks like fun! Cathy took the kids to the aquarium a few days ago and they loved it.
